Tag Archive: Anne Hathaway

So as filming continues in Pittsburgh for The Dark Knight Rises it seems more of the plot is getting revealed… I don’t plan to discuss that here. We all know Bane and the League of Shadows will be a major conflict in the film. We know Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman. But as pictures are flowing from the set and small plot details are leaked, bigger rumors continue to flow. Now to make it clear these are rumors and nothing is confirmed. But it seems Bane busts several people out of prison to create an army of sorts to destroy Gotham. Rumors are circulating that there will be references and possible appearances by the Joker and Two-Face. Now Nolan has made it clear no new actor would play the Joker. So I assume he will be referenced to off hand and never really seen. The idea of seeing Two Face again though is exciting. For me I never really liked how Dent went down in The Dark Knight. SPOILER…. At the end when Batman tackles him off the ledge I didn’t really believe the fall would have killed him. Also in the comics they pulled this trick a number of times, thinking that Two Face was dead but it turned out he wasn’t. For me I thought it would be interesting if Gordon locked Dent away in Arkham so he could be a symbol. Then if Bane broke him out he could use him to destroy to morale of the city. Again I doubt either of these things are true. Maybe a Joker reference could work but bringing in Two Face might be too much in an already stuffed film.

As Nolan prepares to make his third and final film of his Batman franchise, rumors are flying around epically. What we know is that Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle and possibly Catwoman. We know Tom Hardy is going to play Bane. That is perfect in my eyes really and I’m glad they will do a dark and serious Bane. The last time we saw that character on screen was in Batman and Robin where he was basically a giant monster that could only say one word occasionally like “Bomb!”. Now though a range of characters are being mentioned and names attached to those characters are flying. First we have a rumor that Ra’s Al Ghul daughter and the League of Shadows will return. Then it was reported that Joseph Gordon Levitt would play Alberto Falcone which would set up a number of story lines from the comics. Then suddenly the report was shot down and the rumor is that Levitt will play Hugo Strange. That is funny because before Nolan confirmed it, many believed Tom Hardy was going to play Strange.

The real question now the Levitt is confirmed to be in the film one possibility is that he could play the Joker. He could work really well as that character. There might not be enough room for the Joker in the third film. Frankly his story line in the Nolan universe is pretty much over. Batman did ruin his ultimate plan and proved humanity can win even in the face of absolute chaos. Joker lead to Dent becoming Two Face and then Batman took the blame. That story line is over. Now this is about Batman redeeming himself and most likely trying to protect his identity. It’s almost a shame Levitt is in the Dark Knight Rises because you know even after Nolan there will be more Batman films and I think Levitt would be a good Joker for the future.

83rd Academy Award reaction

Last night was an Academy Awards that had a lot of good moments and a lot of, well weird moments. To me the right movies won, some great people won. Yet there were moments last night that made the Oscars look like a poor man’s Golden Globes. They tried to make them “fun” and “younger” but all of this lead it to be messy. The voters also I believe ruined the party the Oscars was planning on. This “younger” vibe they pushed I think was backed on the belief The Social Network would end up winning everything. Instead The King’s Speech basically stole the show and rocked the boat by winning not only a lot of awards but the big one’s including: Screen play, Director, Best Actor, Best Picture.

The biggest surprise was the hosts being as bad as they were. Well let me slow down, Anne Hathaway brought her charm and smile. James Franco frankly looked high the entire time, he also looked like he didn’t want to be there. So the entire show felt off balanced. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Oscars learned from this and bring back an older comedian. Besides that the show actually flowed quickly and went beat for beat. The montages worked very well but the main surprise I guess was the lack of surprise. The Oscars did it to themselves though by nominating people who won last year(Jeff Bridges, Coen Brothers). If Nolan and Inception had been in more nominations I think the race would have been tighter. Don’t talk to me about The Social Network losing that film is great and it won the awards it should have: Screenplay and Editing. Sadly the only thing people will really remember will be Melisso Leo tossing class out the window and cursing during the show, which doesn’t matter because ever since the 2004 Super Bowl everything is on tape delay. Still the Oscars probably enjoyed that because the show wanted to be “edgy” to get ratings. Still the show was different but yet the same somehow. So this will fade from memory soon and next year they will change it up because I’m sure this will look like a failure in the eyes of Hollywood.

So if I had to grade the show I would give it a…. B-…. Could have been a lot better. But serious congrats to The King’s Speech the right movie won the right awards.

It’s been slow in movie news (besides Superman) so I decided to put the debate in place that is it possible Tom Hardy’s Bane and Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman can impress audiences after Heath Ledger’s Joker? Now to be clear it hasn’t been confirmed Hathaway will actually be Catwoman. She’s playing Selina Kyle officially. Now with Nolan behind the camera I have total faith. Batman Begins in my opinion had great villains. Scarecrow was done very well in the most realistic way possible and I loved Liam Neeson’s Ras Al Guhl. Heath Ledger’s Joker though in the Dark Knight scared the shit out of people. He was something everyone feared, a man who first off doesn’t care about his own life, yet all he wants to do is kill and create chaos. His character was everything that scares us about terrorism. Ledger’s performance was a home run and the ending was perfect between him and Batman.

Tom Hardy is a great actor, most audiences know him from his charming character in Inception. Go rent or buy the film Bronson and see what this guy can do. He is perfect for Bane. A lot of people rolled their eyes at the thought of Bane being in the movie but that’s because they remember the character from Batman and Robin. They portrayed him as a one note monster, just repeating lines and sounding like Frankenstein. In the comics Bane was a beast but also very smart and had a boner to hunt down Batman. In the comics he broke Batman’s freaking back! With Hardy and a true version of the character, Bane should be a stand out villain for the franchise.

Anne Hathaway is just one of the best actresses out there hands down. A brilliant female villain is just necessary for the franchise. Rachel Dawes was the only female character in the first two films. Sure she was more important to the plot in the second movie, but over all her character did not have a lot of screen time. Selina Kyle is a fantastic character and Catwoman is a balancing force for Batman. Nolan could make this work. I still feel like Catwoman won’t show up in The Dark Knight Rises, I think it’s a fake, but will see.

Comparing these characters to the Joker is pointless. His character is hard not to enjoy, a villain who doesn’t care and just does whatever he wants is just plain fun to watch. Bane and Catwoman are not like this. They are not about chaos. Bane is about power. Catwoman is straight about sex and lust. I feel bad for Hardy and Hathaway because they will be judged by Ledger’s performance. The comparison will be unfair and unavoidable though. I feel like Nolan picked these villains for a reason. They are the exact opposite of the Joker. Many thought the next baddie would be the Riddler. That character is just too similar to the Joker, as our many bad guys. Also the Joker is not a physical match for Batman, in the film he needed hostages, henchmen and dogs to even slow Batman down. Bane is stronger and better than Batman in every way. This isn’t about fighting random chaos his is about stopping fury that is coming right at you. So sure will people say “Not as good as the Joker”, you bet they will. Still look at the villain choices through the three films and what they will represent and I think most will be very impressed and satisfied.

So Anne Hathaway is Selina Kyle and possibly Catwoman. Tom Hardy is Bane. The main question now is will the villains from the previous movies return? That would make things a little crowded and I believe after Spider-man 3, studios will try and avoid over crowding a movie with characters. The real question is will the Joker or Two Face show up? Well Heath Ledger passed away and in no way would they recast him to play a small part in the third film. Problem is that Nolan’s original idea for the third film involved the Joker. His character and Ledger’s performance made The Dark Knight a huge box office monster. Still his return as a character is doubtful, he’ll probably be mentioned by someone in the film but that’s about it.

Two Face is another story. Sure we in a way see Dent die. Batman tackles him off a roof and fails to catch him. Still though Dent could still be alive. His funeral at the end of The Dark Knight could be a fake. Maybe to help Gotham not fall apart  Batman takes the blame and is chased by the police. While Dent is placed in prison or Akrham Asylum for his own safety. This could work and be great for nerds to have Dent back. Another characters that could return is possibly another Ras Al Guhl or Scarecrow from Batman Begins. Either way expect these types of discussions to continue on about villains until the movie comes out in theaters.

Now that it is confirmed that Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle the next big topic is will she actually be Catwoman? The film Batman Returns which came out in 1994 had to date the best incarnation of the character. Then sadly Halle Barry tried to make a franchise out of it and the movie was just terrible. They tried to make her “hip” and the costume was insane. They also had trouble dealing with the fact that Catwoman was designed to be a villain. So they had her robbing places for the better of man kind… They also had Sharon Stone playing an evil woman who by using too much make up or something made her skin into stone… Yeah the movie was horrible. Then when Nolan took over Batman and made two very serious and dark Batman tales many wrote off that she would be attempted. Now that has changed but should she be used? In a film that will have Bane in it is a woman running around in leather a good idea? To me it is a perfect idea. In a world where men run around in costume or terrorize cities in face paint, wouldn’t a woman eventually get into a costume to make a point? I believe Nolan will make the character work within in the world he’s designed. I think a lot of fans have too many images of Catwoman from the Halle Barry movie and Batman Return and think a serious rendition of the character can be done. I disagree, think of a woman simply doing what Batman does. My problem is I can’t really think of how Catwoman would be involved in the plot they have formed for the third film. Batman is on the run from the police. The mob has basically been destroyed, someone obviously calls in Bane to finish Batman off. Where does Catwoman come in on all of this? I can’t really think of any reason for the character to show up rather to cause trouble for Batman. Any thoughts?

Warner Brothers came out and made the announcement that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy has been cast as Bane. This has created a stir online, since many wrote off Bane as a possible villain for the film. The sequel to the mega hit The Dark Knight is one of the most anticipated films and many fans have their point of view of how the films should be done. Anne Hathaway is a very interesting choice for Selina Kyle, now many of course will expect that Catwoman will follow but this has not been confirmed. Her character alone could be a huge fake to the audience but will see. Hathaway in my opinion is one of the best actresses out there so landing her is just great. Selina Kyle is a necessary character in Batman, this doesn’t mean for sure that Catwoman will be involved, if she is then expect a crazy ride. Tom Hardy was cast very early but even though he’s not well known, his talent is huge and him playing Bane is just brilliant. Many Batman fans who don’t read comics will only remember the character from the film Batman and Robin. There he was shown as a mindless monster who barely had any lines and was a simple henchman. In the comics Bane was very smart and was one of Batman’s biggest villains in the rogue gallery. I mean the dude straight broke Batman’s back in the comics. So I’m very interested in seeing how Christian Bale will play off Hardy on screen and how great this thing could be. So write me down as pumped because I believe Nolan will deliver of us another great Batman film. Also this will be his last, so one would imagine he plans to leave the franchise on a good note.

I love Edward Zwick and for a long time I had no idea he directed this movie until his name came up on the screen. His talent with actors is clear in this film which is in a way a historical picture. We’re used to his historical action films like The Last Samurai and Defiance. Here the film starts in 1996 and the movie feels like a 90’s picture. The music is perfect all the way through and even the way the films paced feels like a movie straight out of the late nineties. This film follows two very interesting young people. The first being Jame, played by Jake Gyllenhaal who is a medical school drop out, who now is a flirtatious salesman who lays pretty much every woman he talks to. His brother played by Josh Glad is a nerd who got rich young. Will return to Glad later who almost grounded this movie to a halt with his minor and pointless character. Anyway Jamie who can’t impress his parents changes jobs and becomes a pharmaceutical salesman. He uses his charm and good looks to sneak his way into hospitals and pitch his drugs to doctors. One of those doctors is Dr. Knight played by the amazing Hank Azaria. While trying to impress the man he meet Maggie(Anne Hathaway) and his advances on her fall flat from the get go. He doesn’t quit and continues to flirt her up. This leads to a romance that is strictly sexual at first. Zwick doesn’t hesitate to hit us over the head with this. Both leads are naked A LOT, sure both of them look amazing, and the nudity is the prove a point. An interesting twist they don’t show in the commercials is that Hathaway’s Maggie has Parkinson’s and as she tries to make sure her life isn’t directed by it, she can’t help but run into issues with it in her relationship with Jamie.

The movie does not exactly show the pharmaceutical business in a good light. Jamie is hound dog who basically uses his talent to sell a product. The people he work for don’t seem to care about consequences when pushing certain pills. It’s obviously clear that they cared much more about selling Zoloft then actually helping people. Jamie’s character avoids these complicated issues by simply making it a game. Everything is game until he meets Maggie, then suddenly his success matters nothing compared to just being around a woman he tried so hard not to love. The movie rely’s heavily on the performances of Hathaway and Gyllenhall, without them the movie would just not work. They are both charming and play off each other very well. There are other stand out performances by Oliver Platt and Azaria. The one performance which is so bad it almost ruins the film is the brother of Jamie played by Josh Gad. The character alone is just a fat, porn addicted, disgusting human being. They try to redeem him late in the movie where he claims he would hate to have empty sex with woman like his brother did, it did not save him. He’s so awful it distracts you from what is going on in the film. I understand he was brought in for comic relief but he is simply too disgusting and over the top. Still over all it is a minor issue as the leads power pst this poor performance and poorly written character.

Most our interest rests on the complex relationship between Jamie and Maggie as they go from wild sex partners, to friends, and then soul mates. Hathaway deserves any award she gets for this performance. She goes from sex symbol to a woman broken by her illness in a way that will simply melt your heart. Gyllenhaal transformers from a selfish womanizer to a selfless man in love and his performance as well should get attention. This is a memorable love story and one that resonates, along with getting a message across about Parkinsons, and America’s love affair with medical drugs.

Rating: 7.5/10

What? When I first read this I found myself confused. Both Hathaway and Franco could be possibly nominated for their work this year. Would this move effect voters? I mean would they even put either of these two up for an award knowing they are the hosts? Hathaway is getting a lot of praise for her work in Love and Other Drugs and Franco for his brave role playing a man who has to cut his own arm off to survive a rock climbing accident. Both actors deserve to be nominated but I’m not sure exactly how much this move could help or hurt their chances.

As hosts they are not the normal choice. Still the Academy has been trying to attract younger viewers without loosing its class. We’ve seen them expand the number of best picture nominees from five to ten. They did this to allow more “main stream” movies to at least get nominated. This move has made it sure films like The Social Network, which doesn’t necessarily deserve to be there but will get in to try and get some sort of facebook crowd to watch. Here they have two younger actors, both of these two have done well in comedy and proved it with charming interviews on late night talk shows and appearances on SNL. Hathaway is just pure talent and she has been involved in the opening of the Academy Awards, when Hugh Jackman hosted a couple years back she was involved in a musical number. So I’m sure these two will do fine, it might leave the door open for even crazier hosting suggestions down the road.

Superman Rumors

So we know only a couple things about the upcoming Superman project, first we know Christopher Nolan is producing, that’s good. We also know Zack Snyder will be directing, that’s interesting. First I love Synder’s style and I really enjoyed his vision of Watchmen. Now some rumors about the story and casting have come out, who knows if they are true at all but they have been flowing around… So lets start with…

Plot rumors: Again no one knows if this is true, just a rumor but this is interesting. The rumor is that the film would start with Clark Kent trying to prove he can help the world without his powers. That he somehow feels that Superman is all that he is so he takes his reporting skills on the road…. That road being Africa. Kent goes to Africa to report on violence in that country. Then something happens to make him decide that Superman is needed in the world. I don’t know how I feel about this. Especially for a reboot of a franchise, I think this type of story line will isolate fans. Audiences won’t exactly understand. Unless the film opens with Superman doing something epic, and then deciding to put the red and blue aside to help in Africa. I don’t know, I really believe fans and audiences just want one thing… Superman kicking ass. Superman Returns was a great film, the problem was besides saving people from disasters Superman didn’t really do much. There was no super powered villain in it. The next film will need one. Lex Luthor can always be apart of the franchise. They also need a Brianiac or Doomsday as well. This is where the story line should go. I was a little worried about Nolan’s involvement in this franchise. He made Batman ultra realistic, that works for Batman, this will not at all work for Superman. The comics were always great when he was facing off against epic villains. So I say drop Africa unless it helps reveal a great super villain.

Cast: Now the rumors for who will play Superman are all over the board. Fans want Jon Hamm from Mad Men. I do as well, he’s awesome. Problem is I guess he’s older than what the studio wants. They like the idea of having a young guy come in and help them make several sequels after the reboot. That’s fine my problem is you have a perfect young Superman… Brandon Routh. He played Clark Kent and Superman perfectly in Superman Returns. Not exactly his fault that the film didn’t end up meeting expectations. He was great and they should have kept him on board for the reboot. Now when it comes to the love interest Lois Lane the one big rumor I’m in love with is Anne Hathaway is being sought for the role. That is just perfect, I mean she is perfect for that character, if that ends up happening my support for the film will jump up to a %100.
